Dr. Suzanne Millman, professor of biomedical sciences and veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine, has been named a Morrill Professor at Iowa State University.
A faculty member at Iowa State since 2008, Millman is a well-known animal welfare expert. She has developed a program related to the fundamentals and policies of animal behavior and well-being in production systems for food producing animals. She is the recipient of the 2022 American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Humane Award given annually to a non-veterinarian to recognize achievement in advancing the welfare of animals through leadership, public service, education, research and product development, or advocacy. Her research supports teaching or is focused on advancing teaching techniques.
Millman was named the holder of the Scott and Nancy Armbrust Professorship in Veterinary Medicine in 2022 and received the 2024 ISU Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching.
Millman has developed the animal welfare program in the College of Veterinary Medicine into one of the most highly regarded program in North America.
"Dr. Millman has a reputation for challenging her students and continuously improving the content and delivery of her courses," wrote Dr. Pat Halbur, retired chair of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine. "She particularly shines when she takes her teaching to the field which keeps the subject relevant to the fast-evolving changes in modern as well as alternative animal agriculture production systems."
