CVM to Celebrate Frederick Douglass Patterson Centennial

During the 2022-23 academic year, the College of Veterinary Medicine will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the graduation of one of its most distinguished graduates. Patterson Centennial Seal

Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson graduated from Iowa State in 1923 with his DVM and later became president of  the Tuskegee Institute where he founded the school's College of Veterinary Medicine and was instrumental in the famous Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. 

Patterson also founded the United Negro College Fund and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The celebration will begin with a noon time celebration and lecture by Brad Kuennen - "Frederick Douglass Patterson: A Life Well-Lived" - Monday, August 22, in the Ramsey Classroom (VM 2532). The lecture is also available on Zoom.

A second event will occur Wednesday, September 14, during the CVM Convocation. Dr. Tara Grinnage-Pulley (DVM '09 & PhD '13), will present the Convocation keynote address. Grinnage-Pulley is a veterinary medical officer for the National Cancer Institute within the National Institutes of Health and is a graduate of Tuskegee University and will share her thoughts on Dr. Patterson and the impact he has had on her life.

The Convocation will be held in the Ramsey Classroom (Vet Med 2532) beginning at 3 p.m. that day.
