Given the intricate nature of many of the conditions we address, often involving multiple organ systems, it's common for our patients to necessitate hospitalization during the diagnostic and treatment processes. In addition to a comprehensive range of blood and urine tests, our service offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including:

Teach
Apart from didactic teaching through lectures, our faculty actively engage in clinically training the upcoming cohort of veterinary general practitioners and specialists. Under the attentive supervision of our faculty, students, interns, and residents undergo thorough clinical training, gaining invaluable experience from the diverse and extensive caseloads seen at our hospital.
Moreover, our faculty extends their expertise to support the veterinary community of Iowa and neighboring states. They regularly contribute to continuing education events and offer tele-consulting services to our referring veterinarians, ensuring a continuum of learning and support across the region.
Research
Our faculty also pursue specific research interests and maintain active clinical research programs. The ultimate aim of our research endeavors is to enhance the well-being of our patients and their caregivers.

Appointments
To schedule an Internal Medicine appointment, please contact us at 515-294-4900. New appointments are available Monday through Thursday, while rechecks are accommodated every weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Additionally, our service accepts transfers from our emergency department seven days a week, 365 days a year.
For most internal medicine appointments, admission of your pet to the medical center for at least one day, if not overnight, is typically required. Given the high demand at our center, not all diagnostic testing can be completed on the same day. Imaging and diagnostic procedures requiring general anesthesia are usually scheduled for the day following the initial appointment.
When scheduling your appointment, please be aware that you may not always see the same doctor or student. Our teams operate on rotational schedules to ensure year-round care while allowing time for teaching and research endeavors. This team-based approach enables us to deliver seamless care for your pet every day of the year
