This Issue's Healthful Hints

Spring has (almost) sprung and it couldn’t have happened soon enough. But before you spring your cat from the comforts of home or let your dog bound through the yard here are some healthful hints to make sure your furry family member is ready for the rising temperatures.

  1. Start flea and tick prevention – if your dog or cat isn’t on a year-round regimen of flea and tick medication, start it up a few weeks before spring arrives.
  2. Start heartworm medication – year-round heartworm prevention care is recommended because treating the condition once it has started can be very costly.
  3. Update their vaccinations – warmer weather means more social contact and trips to the park which increases your dog’s risk of contagious diseases.
  4. Seasonal allergies can flare up – if you notice your pet is constantly itching, has red, irritated skin from hives and rashes, can’t stop licking themselves or are losing fur, they may be showing signs of an allergic reaction. Consult with your veterinarian on ways to relieve your pet's allergies.
  5. Don’t rush the season – after months of being cooped up inside, your pets will be excited to get outdoors. Ease into the season however because dogs especially don’t know their own limits and can become overly exhausted quickly.
  6. Always check with your veterinarian of course if you have any questions or concerns
