Summer Opportunities

Since summer 2006, well over 400 students have supplemented what they’ve learned in the classroom with hands-on, real-life experiences alongside practicing food animal veterinarians. What started with swine has now expanded into the beef, dairy and poultry industries thanks to the collaborative spirit of our sponsors and hosts. To find out more about these unique experiences open to veterinary students across the country go here to watch a presentation.

SVIP

Participants in SVIP (Swine Veterinary Internship Program) collaborate with a mentoring veterinarian or team of veterinarians at a production system or practice. Students are immersed in modern swine production & health daily and take the lead on designing and executing a field trial with guidance from mentors. Students also take part in diagnostic test sampling and implement the principles and methods of swine diagnostic collection, testing and interpretation.

PVIP

The PVIP (Poultry Veterinary Internship Program) will provide unique opportunities for students to learn more about different sectors of poultry production and spend time with a poultry veterinarian overseeing flock health & well-being. Interns are also provided field-based experiences and a research opportunity that complements the traditional veterinary education curriculum.

RVIP

RVIP (Rural Veterinary Internship Program) is designed to give students a feel for what life after graduation would be like in a rural veterinary clinic and the clients and community it serves. It is modeled after other VIP programs the College of Veterinary Medicine offers in bovine, swine and poultry medicine. NOTE: RVIP is available only to Iowa State University veterinary students.
