Swine Extension

The Swine Veterinary Extension program is an outreach program of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.  Our purpose is to assist practicing veterinarians, extension specialists, and swine producers in the state of Iowa and across the world.  We work collaboratively with faculty in Food Supply Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Iowa Pork Industry Center.  Specific areas of interest include: infectious diseases, swine production related opportunities, industry issues (such as Common Swine Industry Audit and Antibiotic Use Regulations) and field based applied research to answer animal health and production questions. Some of the activities in order to fulfill our mission include:

  • Supporting practicing veterinarians with field investigations
  • Delivering ISU research to swine producers and practitioners.
  • Organizing the annual James D. McKean ISU Swine Disease Conference
  • Providing continuing educational programs for swine producers and veterinarians
  • Assisting veterinarians and extension agents with local producer meetings
  • Assist in developing content for workshops in conjunction with the Iowa Pork Industry Center.
  • Develop field based research trials to assist swine veterinarians in making better animal health and production decisions.
  • Working with allied organizations such as the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the Iowa Pork Industry Center
